ASSISTANT PLANNER or PLANNER

Full Time

Wynn Coastal Planning & Biology is seeking an Environmental Planner for Private Consulting Firm located in Fort Bragg California, a small town coastal area of Mendocino County, located in Northern California. The firm handles both private, commercial and public agency clients as an entitlement permit facilitator, advisor, and advocate for quality development.

We are seeking a full time, Assistant Planner or Planner (Planner I or Planner II), who could be described as either entry-level within their professional planning career, or a near or full journey level professional who can “hit the ground running” to assist in a growing practice. Applicants must be up for the challenge of navigating the complexities of the California Coastal Zone regulations, which includes easing the anxieties of clients required to comply with such regulations.

Our small firm is casual but professional. We maintain levity and a work/life balance, but always focus on delivering the utmost quality of service to our clients for projects both within Mendocino County and beyond.

Minimum Qualifications

The Planner II/Junior position requires a requires a master’s degree with two years of experience in the planning, land use and/or environmental planning profession; alternatively, a bachelor’s degree and four years of professional planning experience.

The Planner I/Assistant Planner position require a bachelor’s degree in planning, land use and/or environmental planning in addition to one year of planning experience.

A successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to adapt to new situations, including interpretation and counterpoint positions in a variety of areas. This position also requires an ability to demonstrate the ability grow professionally and to learn. It is also fundamental to have a sense of humor and perspective to look for bottom line advantage.

BIOLOGIST TECH or BIOLOGIST

A successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to adapt to new situations, including interpretation and counterpoint positions in a variety of areas. A strong sense of ethics is a must in terms of understanding all stakeholder positions and compassion for the environment.

The successful candidate must have a strong and proven desire to excel in biology and environmental science and have a keen desire to grow within the field. Ideally the candidate’s passion for environmental science and biology extends into their hobbies outside of work – e.g. botanizing and bird watching. The applicant needs to show they are willing to rise to the challenge and have the attitude and effort to learn. The position will allow professional growth and expansion into relevant areas if the successful applicant can show they have a strong grasp on their current duties. The office is often a fast-paced working environment that can be stressful so it is fundamental to have a sense of humor and perspective to look for bottom line advantage.

Typical Functions

Biologist Technician

  • Assists private clients (and some government agencies) in understanding environmental rules and regulations pertaining to their project
  • Work closely with planners and other biologists in office to develop project timeline and understand biological work required for a site
  • Researches new rules and regulations pertaining to environmental resources
  • Accurately fill out data sheets
  • Writes, interprets and/or presents formal and technical reports, working papers, and correspondence in support of such projects
  • Ability to hike on steep and wet terrain
  • Confidentially conduct site visits to determine whether special status resources are present
  • Develop an understanding of the flora and fauna of Mendocino County

Biologist (in addition to the above)

  • Interpret biological findings on a site and determine least impacting area based upon regulations
  • Site ID flora and fauna of Mendocino County and primarily along the Mendocino coast. If cannot site ID a species than be able to key out to correctly ID the species.
  • Correspond with Agencies and clients regarding biological findings
  • Develop Mitigation and Monitoring measures for projects
  • Willing to be the leader and/or receive direction on projects
  • Know when site visits need to be conducted to determine if special status resources are present
  • Attends meetings, both private and public to advance projects, sometimes in the evening

 

 

Typical Knowledge

Biology Technician

  • Knowledge of California Environmental Regulations
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection
  • Knowledge of effective writing techniques
  • Statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which include Microsoft Office, Internet applications, and ArcGIS
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Work well alone or in team environment

Biologist (in addition to the above)

  • How to determine the least impacting location of a property
  • Site ID Mendocino flora to determine if species is listed or not
  • Working knowledge of plant associations and alliances
  • ACOE wetland delineation procedures
  • Identification of special status fauna and habitat
  • Knowledge of or experience in relevant Local, State and Federal laws and programs

Typical Skills

Biology Technician & Biologist

  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to present research findings to coworkers, clients, Agencies, and public
  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve vaguely defined practical problems
  • Ability to review reports and provide constructive critiques. Also write and review reports for consistency and flaws
  • Proven ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously and be cognizant of due dates and time lines for each project
  • Ability to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind
  • Strong note taking skills and ability to keep data organized
  • Proven ability to site ID and/or key to species
  • Ability to take an idea and expand on it
